NFL AI Predictions: How the Model Reads a Sunday Slate
Pressure rate, neutral-script pace, rest differential and multi-book line movement — the four features that decide whether an NFL game earns a place on the daily card.
What the model looks at first
An NFL slate is small and heavily priced, which means the market is efficient and the model has to be selective. Before a game is even considered, ASCEND-QX builds a feature frame from team and player logs, pressure and coverage rates, neutral-script pace, rest and travel differential, injury designations, weather, and line movement observed across multiple books.
Every one of those inputs is converted to a z-score against its own league-season distribution. That standardisation is what lets a two-point line move and a five-percent pressure-rate gap sit on the same scale and be weighted against each other honestly.
Why most NFL games never make the card
The composite signal is passed through logistic calibration to produce a model probability, and that number is compared with the de-vigged market probability. The difference is the edge. If the edge does not clear the threshold, the game is discarded regardless of how confident the narrative around it feels.
In a typical week that leaves a handful of qualifying games out of the full schedule. A short card is a feature, not a failure — the alternative is manufacturing plays to fill a quota, which is precisely what erodes long-run return.
Where the NFL edge actually comes from
Historically the model's NFL return is concentrated in two places: totals in games where the projected neutral-script pace disagrees with the market's implied pace, and sides where an injury designation has moved the price further than the personnel change justifies.
Both are pricing errors rather than prediction miracles. The model is not claiming to know the score — it is claiming the price is wrong, and sizing accordingly under quarter-Kelly with a three-unit cap.
